{"id":346,"date":"2021-04-19T15:53:54","date_gmt":"2021-04-19T13:53:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yetunde-siemers.com\/blog\/?p=346"},"modified":"2021-12-13T10:34:42","modified_gmt":"2021-12-13T09:34:42","slug":"i-sometimes-wonder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yetunde-siemers.com\/blog\/all\/346\/","title":{"rendered":"I sometimes wonder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2026what people mean when they say I have a beautiful name.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve heard it, said it, spelt it, read it and mispronounced it<br \/>\nso many times, I have taken it entirely for granted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Mostly though, I wonder<br \/>\nhow one can claim to find the beauty in a name<br \/>\nthey know neither meaning nor pronunciation of.<br \/>\nDoes one just find it beautifully written?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Y\u00e9t\u00fand\u00e9<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Short for Y\u00e8y\u00e9t\u00fand\u00e9, <em>mother has returned<\/em>,<br \/>\nin the Yor\u00f9b\u00e1 language.<br \/>\nMeaning that a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother<br \/>\ndied and came back as a new-born.<br \/>\nReincarnated.<br \/>\nIn my case, beloved great-grandma, mother of my maternal grandpa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As opposed to a father, grandfather, great-grandfather:<br \/>\nBab\u00e1t\u00fand\u00e9, <em>father has returned<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Or a child or loved one that was previously lost:<br \/>\nAy<span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">\u1ecd\u0300<\/span>t\u00fand\u00e9, <em>joy has returned<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As a child, I wondered why you would ever<br \/>\ngive anyone the burden of such a name. It felt heavy.<br \/>\nLike I had to live up to someone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Later on, I thought it was probably nice<br \/>\nto be named after someone who was so loved<br \/>\nthat she is still fondly spoken of.<br \/>\nIt could have been worse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Now I think Y\u00e9t\u00fand\u00e9 it is a touching name.<br \/>\nBut beautiful?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I do have a name that I consider beautiful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Backtrack.<br \/>\nI have several names, I consider one of them beautiful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Backtrack.<br \/>\nNigerians are named in grand ceremonies,<br \/>\n7 or 8 days after birth, where<br \/>\nanyone present and willing can give a child a name<br \/>\nreflecting what the child means to them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Also, Nigerians are named in full, storytelling,<br \/>\ngrammatically complete sentences.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">My sister: Ol\u00fawa<span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">\u1e63<\/span>eun, <em>(We) thank God<\/em>,<br \/>\nthe first words uttered by my mother<br \/>\nafter a long and difficult birth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">My brother: Ol\u00fawad\u00e1mil\u00e1re, <em>God has vindicated me<\/em>,<br \/>\nwhen his paternal origin was questioned<br \/>\nup until his birth.<br \/>\n(insert scandal here, end with \u2018Dad left\u2019, erase scandal)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I assume that firstborn children receive the most names,<br \/>\nwhile the enthusiasm is still great.<br \/>\nAlso, babies who leave their parents waiting on God<br \/>\nor exploring science.<br \/>\nI got four names. Nothing wild, I guess.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">My second name, which is already too long<br \/>\nto fit into my passport,<br \/>\nOl\u00fawaf\u00fanmilay<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">\u1ecd\u0300<\/span>, means <em>God has given me joy<\/em><br \/>\nand is probably my most embodied name.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I consider myself a good child.<br \/>\nConsciously and subconsciously, I have tried<br \/>\nnot to bring my loved ones sorrow. By default,<br \/>\nI assume that I have brought them some level or form of joy.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s not ask anyone for confirmation though.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">My third name,<br \/>\n\u00c0j<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">\u1ecd<\/span>k<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">\u1eb9\u0301<\/span>, means <em>born to be pampered by all<\/em>.<br \/>\nI\u2019m not complaining.<br \/>\nThis is my eulogy name, for singing me<br \/>\nOr\u00edk\u00ec, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Or%C3%ADk%C3%AC\">praise poetry,<\/a><br \/>\nto the accompaniment of a talking drum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I can tell you that I have had Or\u00edk\u00ec<br \/>\nsung of me. If this doesn\u2019t make you<br \/>\nfeel like a warrior, nothing else will.<br \/>\nHere\u2019s an example of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xoQXUA1LiDo\">christian Or\u00edk\u00ec<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I personally think my beautiful name is<br \/>\nZainat<br \/>\nYor\u00f9b\u00e1 form: S\u00edn\u00e1t\u00f9<br \/>\nwhich coincidentally means<br \/>\n<em>beauty or adornment<\/em> in Arabic and<br \/>\nwas given to me by my paternal grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So I\u2019m a reincarnated, joy-bringing beaut to be pampered by all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I\u2019m feeling quite good about myself<br \/>\nright about now, this would be a good place<br \/>\nto end my musings. But<br \/>\nas with many things Nigerian,<br \/>\nthere is often a side story.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Side story one<br \/>\n(because yes, there is also a second side story):<br \/>\nWhen your Muslim father<br \/>\nallows your maternal grandmother to raise you<br \/>\nin the catholic church, and the stars align<br \/>\nin the most ridiculous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nollywood\">Nollywood<\/a> way on<br \/>\na random Sunday morning in boarding school, so that<br \/>\nthe visiting priest suddenly has the right,<br \/>\nwithout warning mind,<br \/>\nto get you baptised, give you holy communion and get you confirmed<br \/>\nall on the same day\u2026 you might find yourself<br \/>\nscrambling to find 2 additional names<br \/>\nin the space of minutes.<br \/>\n*rolls eyes*<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In retrospect, this whimsical decision<br \/>\nof the Vatican, to reduce three<br \/>\napparently massive events to a<br \/>\nfleeting nothingness, that wasn\u2019t even recorded<br \/>\nand therefore didn\u2019t really happen,<br \/>\nmight have contributed to my equally fleeting<br \/>\nconversion to Islam a year later. But<br \/>\nthat\u2019s another story entirely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Let\u2019s just say, I will not<br \/>\nbe adding my three catholic names<br \/>\nto this list.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But,<br \/>\nside story two:<br \/>\nyou could still get mighty surprised when<br \/>\nsaid diligent maternal grandmother, who<br \/>\nrecords every minute detail in<br \/>\nbeautiful cursive school-script font,<br \/>\nwrites you a love letter at age 20,<br \/>\nin which she states your<br \/>\nother three (!) names<br \/>\nthat everyone else forgot to call you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Revision:<br \/>\nApparently, even after deleting three names,<br \/>\nI now have seven.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Let\u2019s be honest though,<br \/>\nI am a firm believer that your names<br \/>\nhelp shape your personality and these<br \/>\ncame a tad too late.<br \/>\nBut just for the record:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Mod\u00fap<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">\u1eb9\u0301\u1ecd<\/span>l\u00e1: I am grateful for wealth<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">\u1ecc<\/span>p<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">\u1eb9\u0301<\/span>mip<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">\u1ecd\u0300<\/span>: my gratitude is abundant<br \/>\nAd\u00e9bank<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">\u1eb9\u0301<\/span>: Crown\/royalty protects<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Absolute strangers to me, all three.<br \/>\nUnlike<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Y\u00e9t\u00fand\u00e9 Ol\u00fawaf\u00fanmilay<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">\u1ecd\u0300<\/span> \u00c0j<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">\u1ecd<\/span>k<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">\u1eb9\u0301<\/span> S\u00edn\u00e1t\u00f9<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And in this context,<br \/>\nwhen I roll my names off<br \/>\nin my mother tongue, like a song,<br \/>\nlike an <em>Or\u00edk\u00ec<\/em>,<br \/>\nI do catch a glimpse of the beauty in<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Y\u00e9t\u00fand\u00e9<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Y\u00e9wand\u00e9, Y\u00e9b<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">\u1ecd\u0300<\/span>d\u00e9, Y\u00e9s\u00ecd\u00e9, Y\u00e9t\u00fanj\u00ed, Y\u00e9j\u00edd\u00e9, \u00ccy\u00e1b<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">\u1ecd\u0301<\/span><br \/>\nY\u00e8y\u00e9 t\u00fan d\u00e9<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Y\u00e8y\u00e9 mi t\u00fan d\u00e9<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Because when my diligent, catholic,<br \/>\nmaternal grandma, now 94 years old and<br \/>\nstill writing in beautiful cursive school-script,<br \/>\ninevitably leaves me, I\u2019d<br \/>\nabsolutely love the idea<br \/>\nof her coming back<br \/>\nto me<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Y\u00e8y\u00e9 mi pad\u00e0 w\u00e1 b\u00e1mi<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2026what people mean when they say I have a beautiful name.
